Seriously, why do we struggle so much as believers in Christ to actually spend time in the Word of God? The Bible teaches that we’re on a spiritual battlefield and that it’s our sword for survival and victory. There’s not one of us who would go into an actual physical battle without a weapon, so why do we choose to limp through life, day after day, without our spiritual sword firmly gripped in our hand? We treat the Bible as optional and since no one really expects us to read it – we just don’t! We have a million excuses like, “I don’t have time,” “I feel like a hypocrite when I read,” or “It’s too hard.” I think Jesus would tell us that our excuses reveal that we lack conviction, we love our sin and that we’re just plain lazy! But here’s a thought, if we knew a famine was coming, every single one of us would be working hard to store up what we’d need to survive, right? Well, we’re in the midst of a spiritual famine right now – generations deep into biblical illiteracy. We have a general lack of the knowledge and understanding of the truth of God’s Word and we’re starving to death! Jesus gave us His Spirit and His Word, therefore we have everything we need to understand, memorize and be changed by every word written in The Bible. Jesus urges us in Matthew 11 to come to Him and live His kind of rest. He offers to take our burdens in exchange for true freedom. He wants us to learn from Him, become like Him, loving others with the intent to teach them how to also learn from Him. But this is absolutely impossible without spending time getting to know Christ through His Word, actually talking to Him through prayer and letting Him educate us about His Kingdom and its culture through the Word. Psalm 68:11 says, “The LORD announces the word and the women who proclaim it are a mighty throng” – this throng was an intentional army of women who knew the Lord, understood His commands and were prepared to speak! Ladies, if you’re not intentionally being trained by God, then you’re a liability in His Army because you can’t proclaim what you’re not listening to! KNOWING the Lord means spending time with the Lord and you need the Word to do that. So, let’s just dispense with the excuses, okay?
